Onshape Support

Everything you need to know about using DFM Copilot with Onshape

1. Getting Started

How to connect your Onshape account

Connecting your Onshape account is the first step to using DFM Copilot. We use OAuth 2.0 for a secure connection, ensuring we never see your password.

  1. Click the "Sign in with Onshape" button on the login page.
  2. You will be redirected to Onshape's secure authorization page.
  3. Review the requested permissions (Read/Write access to documents is needed for analysis).
  4. Click "Authorize" to grant access.
  5. You will be automatically redirected back to the DFM Copilot dashboard.

How to connect your first CAD document

Once logged in, you'll see your Dashboard.

  • Click the "Select Document" button (or the document icon).
  • A list of your recently modified Onshape documents will appear.
  • Select the document you wish to analyze.
  • The system will automatically fetch the latest version and begin analysis.

2. How It Works

How the AI analyzes your CAD models

DFM Copilot reads the geometry and feature data directly from your Onshape Part Studio. It looks for common manufacturability issues such as:

  • Thin walls that might break or fail to print/mold.
  • Undercuts that require special tooling.
  • Tight tolerances that increase cost.
  • Holes too close to edges.

What the manufacturability score means (0-100)

80-100 (Excellent)

Ready for production. Minimal risk.

60-79 (Good)

Minor issues found. Review suggested.

40-59 (Fair)

Significant issues. Redesign likely needed.

0-39 (Needs Work)

Critical flaws detected. Not manufacturable.

3. Troubleshooting

OAuth/Authentication Issues

"Can't sign in with Onshape"

Ensure pop-ups are allowed for this site. If the window closes immediately, try clearing your browser cache.

"Authorization failed" errors

This usually happens if the session timed out. Return to the login page and try again.

How to revoke and re-authorize

Go to your Onshape Account Settings > Applications > Authorized Applications and revoke "Qualica DFM". Then sign in again.

Analysis Not Running

"No analysis results showing"

Make sure your Part Studio has valid 3D geometry. Sketches alone cannot be analyzed for DFM.

"Sync button not working"

Check your internet connection. If the issue persists, refresh the page.

4. Features Documentation

Key Features

  • 📊
    Manufacturability Score

A weighted average of all detected issues, normalized by part complexity.

  • 🏭
    Process Recommendations

AI evaluates your geometry against CNC, Injection Molding, and 3D Printing constraints to suggest the best process.

  • 🤖
    AI Chat Assistant

Ask questions like "Why is this wall too thin?" or "How can I reduce machining cost?" for context-aware answers.

  • Real-time Updates

Webhooks ensure that every time you save a change in Onshape, the analysis updates automatically.

5. FAQ

How accurate is the AI analysis?

Our analysis is based on industry-standard DFM rules and geometric analysis. While highly accurate for common issues, it should be used as a guide alongside professional engineering judgment.

What manufacturing processes are supported?

Currently, we support analysis for CNC Machining (Milling/Turning), Injection Molding, and Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing).

Is my CAD data secure?

Yes. We only access your data transiently to perform analysis. We do not store your 3D geometry permanently, and we adhere to strict data privacy standards.

Can I use this for production parts?

DFM Copilot is a powerful tool for optimization, but final production validation should always be done by the manufacturer.
